Would I Recommend Freida McFadden?
Hi all, if you don’t know then recently I’ve been on a huge thriller kick which is pretty unsual for me as thrillers are probably my least read genre. I don’t dislike the genre but I can be very picky with what I read when it comes to this genre compared to Fantasy or Romance. I’d heard a lot about Freida’s books and so I figured I’d give her a shot but instead of just trying one, I decided to try eight. Here are the books I tried and a few thoughts, in the order that I read them.
One by One - This was the first book I decided to read and I had a decent enough time reading it however I thought the twist at the end was a little anti-climactic, I wasn’t entirely sure what I was expecting to happen at the end but I wasn’t satisfied and it definitely let down the book for me. 3/5 Stars.
Never Lie - I was absoutely blown away with this one. I knew it had mixed reviews, I think mostly because it’s too unrealistic but it’s fiction so I don’t mind too much if things are a bit eccentric. Personally, I loved it. I felt extremly unsettled all the way through and the misdirection was incredibly well done, I thought I had it all figured out but I could not have predicted the twist in this book in a million years. 5/5 Stars.
The Boyfriend - This is the book that decided Freida McFadden was definitely my new favourite thriller author. It’s also when I decided to start called Freida “the queen of misdirection” because yet again she had me absoutely baffled with the plot twist. 5/5 Stars.
The Co-Worker - Definitely my least favourite of the books I’ve read so far. It wasn’t a bad book but I wasn’t gripped at all during this and the other books have always kept me wanting to read whereas with this one I had to push myself a bit to pick it up. I also wasn’t overly surprised by the twist, I didn’t predict it but looking back it was definitely an easier plot to predict. 2.5/5 Stars.
The Locked Door - Again there was nothing awful about this book, it was a decent read and fairly entertaining but definitely predicatable and didn’t have my jaw dropping however the atomsphere was really well done, I did get chills while reading this. 3/5 Stars.
Ward D - While I might not have given this book 5 stars, it is definitely my favourite so far. I love a creepy, psych ward setting and Freida does a perfect job of making you want to read with the lights on with Ward D. To say I was uncomfortable is an understatement, I was jumping at sounds that I’m pretty sure I was just making up. 4.5/5 Stars.
The Perfect Son - This was another one of those book that was decent but not mindblowing, I had a good time reading it but I honestly don’t have that much to say about this one either positively or negatively. The ending wasn’t a big, major plot twist but I did enjoy it and it’s definitely why this book didn’t get a lower rating. 3/5 Stars.
The Inmate - Another one that I absolutely adored, after having read a bunch of thrillers I figured I’d be better equiped to figure out what was going to happen but instead I just ended up giving myself a headache and got creeped out, a lot. I would say it’s predictable, but there was a lot happening that made me keep jumping back and forth between conclusions but at the end there was just twist after twist that made my jaw drop. 4/5 Stars.
All in all I would absoutely recommend you try Freida McFadden’s books if you haven’t already, they might not all be perfect but there are definitely a lot of gems that I feel are must read books for any Thriller fan.
